What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that affects the skin in different ways. Its not just skin deep, psoriasis occurs as the result of the body's immune system mistaking the skin cells as a pathogen which then means the immune system sends out faulty signals which speed up the production of skin cells. There are five different types: plaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, pustular psoriasis and erythrodermic psoriasis.

I'm not a doctor but thought I would give a short definition of what psoriasis is if you're viewing the blog and unsure  what exactly I'm blogging about!

How do you get psoriasis?

As far as I know, no one has yet been able to identify exact psoriasis causes. It is believed the cause of psoriasis is both genetic and can be effected by your environment and influencing factors such as stress and diet.

Is there a cure for psoriasis?

There are many psoriasis treatments available, however there is currently no cure for psoriasis.

I think I might have psoriasis, what should I do?

If you think you have noticed psoriasis symptoms on your skin I would recommend going to see your doctor, who can refer you to a specialist. It can be daunting but the sooner you do the sooner you can start treating the psoriasis.

Can you recommend anywhere to find out more about psoriasis?

There are so many great resources out there if you're suffering with psoriasis, or know someone that is, a visit to your GP or a dermatologist is probably the best place to start as they are professionals and can point you in the right direction. If you're looking for some websites to read online, I would recommend The British Skin Foundation and The Psoriasis Association. I'm also following some really great Twitter accounts which you can view on my profile here.

Why have you started a blog about psoriasis?

I have started a blog about my experiences with psoriasis to share information and advice with other people with the skin condition but also to do my bit to create awareness about psoriasis. I have struggled with the condition for as long as I can remember and want to make sure this condition doesn't defeat me so I am actively doing something about it. I'd also like to get talking to other people and hear about their opinions and past experiences.

Have you genuinely tried and tested the products you are blogging about?
All the products I blog about are items that I have bought and tested unless otherwise stated. My main aim is to give my readers truthful and honest feedback about psoriasis products that are available on the market. I will try and do this to the best of my ability!

Can I ask you questions about psoriasis?

I welcome any questions or feedback about psoriasis or the blog. Please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to get back to you as quickly as I can.

  1. Hello All,

Kara has been kind enough and brave enough to get involved in my documentary in the hope that together we'll raise awareness for the condition and help other sufferers.

My name is Hayley Arnold and I'm the daughter of a psoriasis suffer who has had psoriatic arthritis and plaque psoriasis for nearly 30 years.

Skin Deep is a documentary that I'm making about psoriasis sufferers that focuses on people's experiences and stories of the condition. Whilst also addressing how the condition effects their lives and that of their relatives and loved ones. I hope the documentary will be a positive experience for those who take part. The aim of the documentary is to raise awareness of the condition and the need for better emotional care for patients and their families. The documentary is also looking at the bigger issues surrounding the disease such as care, lack of emotional support and the continued research into looking for better treatments, a cure and understanding the condition. I also hope to speak to dermatologists on what treatments are available to patients and the condition itself.

My main aim is that the documentary will raise awareness for the condition but I also hope that it will be a film of inspirational stories and experiences that will help other suffers understand their condition and themselves better. I also believe it will help families and partners to understand their loved one who lives with the condition.

I hope that by posting here other people living with psoriasis's will find the confidence to speak out, share their stories and demand better care and treatments that you so rightly deserve.

You can find more information about the documentary here You can find more information about the documentary here http://hayleylouisearnold.wix.com/skindeep1 and you can view my personal website here www.hayleyarnold.co.uk If you do have any questions or concerns then please don't hesitate to contact me.

I hope to hear from you soon.

    All the best

    Hayley Arnold

  4. hi, im 15 and ive suffered with psoriasis for so many years, i have had every cream i posssibly can, ive had sunlight treatment but it is still so bad that i hate even looking at it in the mirror cause it makes me upset, at this moment it had flared up because of the cold and nothing is working to get rid of it... i hate it, i needed to put this somewhere and it seems a good place to say it

  5. I have the same problem as you. There is oil - PsoVitEx, native to Asia and is the only product that helped me. Skin damage is smaller, the results are exceptional! I recommend it ...

  6. I have psoriasis also. I use Moller’s Omega-3 Premium almost every day. This is important and necessary to use for people, especially for those who has psoriasis.

  8. Hello, i'm 37 years old and i have psoriasis since I was 18.i live in Athens, Greece and i've tried almost everything.Few months ago i was in a terrible condition, finding it hard even to put clothes on my body.i went to a new doctor who told me i should stop eating sugar, pork, full fat Dairy, alcohol.it wasn't easy since i love both sweets and a glass of wine but i've seen results that surprised not just me ..You can use stevia instead of sugar.I was given some pills as well but it was mainly the diet, the doctor was very strict about that.it's a matter of detox..thank you

  9. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (with the mother), also use WiseWays Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse, it's worth it. Also consider seeing a Kinesiologist for a liver flush. These work best for me when I flare up. I usually avoid most oils because they tend to cause more build up in the long run. Hope this helps :)

  10. I only discovered recently that my Arthritis is psoriatric, and that the so called dry scalp was inact, psoriasis, when a very stressful 6months led to ugly angry looking red scales all over my scalp and falling hair ! I have studied a great deal. Medical and alternative. I do believe that keeping ourselves as alkaline [the system/blood] as possible is the best method.. that means, no junk food, no sugar [very little] Sugar is the enemy of psoriasis , as is smoking, too much alcohol [sugar again and addtives, chemicals] keep the food mainly fruit and veg, chicken, and cut back on dairy. some may find that Gluten is a trigger. We are all different. I had extremely bad Acne for years, and now, having good skin, at 64, I am appalled to think, that my psoriasis maybe coming down onto my face, [eyebrows] as well as scalp and ears.. however, I am drinking lots of water, using proper shampoos, I still colour my hair as I have very grey/white hair and a young face, am not prepared to let it go grey/white yet. I think stress definitely makes it worse. Fresh air,, exercise and if possible, sun. I just hope that when the scales are gone, that the hair will grow back abit thicker again, as my hair is very very fine. Hugs to everyone. x

  12. I have just been diagnosed with psoriasis. I have it in my scalp some on my back legs arms and chest. I have been prescribed an ointment called dovonex ointment.Have anyone had any experience using this. I have used it only for three days and areas that looked like the ere getting paper and smaller now look like they are red like sunburn and at starting my skin to peel.My doctor says this is normal and will settle down but I am not sure wether to continue using it.Also I have noticed the use of a tar based shampoo does not seem to help with the scale in my scalp and the betnavate scalp lotion is not having uch effect. I looked on the internet and found good reviews about a natural shampoo from a company called Human organics has anyone tried it?
